Four Tips for Returning to Work After a Job Injury

May 27th, 2020 at 5:38 pm

IL work injury lawyerThe final stage following a work injury can be one of the most difficult. You are feeling better, and ready to return to work, but is your body ready?  Unfortunately, there is no conclusive answer to this as it depends on the individual and the severity of the injury. However, research shows that getting back to work can be a critical component of the recovery process.

With so many variables to keep in mind, here are a few tips to ease yourself into returning to work after your injury:

  1.   Listen to your doctor. When it comes to medical issues, the professionals know best. It is important to listen to your doctor to make the most out of your recovery process.
  2.   Document any limitations or restrictions you may have. Regardless of how you may feel, trust your doctor’s orders to avoid overexertion and reinjury. Be sure that your employer understands what you can and cannot handle, and do not be afraid to speak up if a job may be too tough for you to do.
  3.   Promote proper safety and work readiness. Whether you have experienced an injury or not, maintaining property safety measures and work readiness is extremely important. Encourage stretching before lifting heavy equipment, proper lifting techniques, and other wellness tips such as an adequate amount of sleep.
  4.   Do not be afraid to ask for help. Working too hard following an injury can be detrimental to your recovery process. Ask for an extra break throughout your day if necessary, and/or the possibility of an extra hand on the job. No matter how difficult this may be, keeping the line of communication open will prevent future issues from arising.

Recovery is not a “one size fits all.” The key is to find balance, listen to what your body is telling you, and respond accordingly. By utilizing these tips, you will eventually return to normalcy within your personal and professional life.
