Work Injuries Increase During the Summertime

June 30th, 2020 at 10:19 pm

IL work injury lawyer, Ilinois workers comp attorney, Facing an injury is never easy, even when you have workers’ compensation benefits to count on. According to reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employees experience more work injuries during the summer months of June, July, and August than any other time of the year. Some risks are weather-related, while others are not. These are the four most common injuries that arise the most during the summer and those the biggest threat to workers.

  1.   Heatstroke. Warm weather and intense physical labor can be a recipe for disaster. Working in the sun and extreme heat can cause the body to shut down. To prevent heatstroke, workers should work close to a shaded area, drink plenty of water, and take frequent breaks.
  2.   Dehydration. In line with heat stroke, dehydration is another common summer injury. Signs of dehydration include dry skin, headaches, and fatigue. This can be prevented by drinking plenty of water, keeping an extra supply on hand, and having additional employees nearby to remind you to stop and take a drink every 10-15 minutes.
  3.   Falls. Falls occur throughout the year but have been shown to increase in the summer. Proper footwear and harnesses, as well as extreme alertness, are no match against falls, which can cause serious injury or even death. Having routine safety meetings, inspecting and replacing equipment, and acclaiming to the weather can decrease the chance of injury.
  4.   Sprains, strains, and tears. Symptoms of sprains, strains, and tears can vary. Typically, pain and swelling will result, and you may feel off balance. If you believe you have a sprain, strain, or tear, be sure to seek immediate medical attention, as improper treatment may lead to a decrease in range of motion, constant discomfort, and instability.

Aside from these four common summertime injuries, there are many more that pose constant threats to workers. To prevent injury exposure, it is important to take the appropriate safety measures at all times.
